Google’s newly opened Waltham Cross Data Centre is already delivering meaningful impact within the local community. A reception held to celebrate the milestone this February showcased the scale of the opportunity and its impact on Broxbourne.

The data centre forms part of Google’s two-year, £5 billion investment programme in the UK, to support the country’s growing AI economy and provide the infrastructure needed for AI powered services such as Google Cloud, Search, Maps and Workspace. Inaugurated in September 2025 by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, the facility is projected to generate 8,250 jobs annually across UK businesses.

A boost for local business and skills

Even before its opening, the development injected major economic value into the area. More than 250 companies, many local, contributed to its construction – strengthening regional supply chains and creating new business opportunities.

There are currently 130 local people working onsite, and Google has made early investments to support its talent pipeline, delivering 200 hours of engagement in local schools and engaging 12 young people through placements and apprenticeships.

Supporting community life

Local charities such as: Community, Health and Expanding Skills (CHEXS), Community Alliance Broxbourne & East Herts, Hertfordshire Community Foundation and SPACE Hertfordshire will benefit from Google’s community funding, helping them deliver essential services and reach more residents. This aligns with Google’s wider commitment to community development in Hertfordshire, including a dedicated local community fund managed by Broxbourne Council.
