More than 500,000 UK businesses are still using traditional landlines that will soon be retired, according to a recent article from ISPreview – and many could face service disruption if they don’t act in time.

As the UK moves to fully digital phone services, Openreach has warned that organisations still relying on analogue lines need to prepare now to avoid higher costs, equipment failures, or even loss of service.

The national phase out of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) will be completed by 31 January 2027, and every provider is working to the same timetable. Many companies have already made the move, but a significant number remain unaware that action is needed.

This transition sits alongside wider improvements to digital infrastructure across the county. Through our Digital Hertfordshire programme, work is already under way to ensure local businesses can benefit from faster connectivity, modern systems, and a more resilient digital future.

What’s changing, and why
The UK’s copper-based landline network has reached the end of its life. Phone calls will now be delivered through VoIP (digital voice), which uses your broadband connection instead of the traditional phone line. This modern technology is more reliable, more flexible, and better suited to the growing digital needs of businesses.

What businesses need to do now
If your organisation still uses traditional landlines, you’ll need to switch to digital voice before January 2027. This affects all devices that run through your landline, including:

  • Desk phones
  • Alarm systems
  • CCTV
  • Door entry systems
  • Lift alarms
  • Payment terminals and POS systems

A good first step is to create an inventory of everything plugged into your phone line. Check with your service provider or the equipment manufacturer to confirm what is compatible with digital services and what may require upgrading.

Be prepared for power cuts
One important difference: digital phones won’t work during a power outage unless you have a backup supply.

Businesses should consider:

  • Keeping a mobile phone as a backup
  • Purchasing a battery backup unit to keep essential equipment running

Speak to your provider early
Every business setup is different. Contact your communications provider for:

  • A review of your current system
  • Support with upgrading equipment
  • Guidance on switching smoothly to digital services
