Hertfordshire Film Office has reported an estimated £6.5 million in local economic impact in the first quarter of the 2025/26 financial year (April – June). This figure surpasses the annual total for 2023/24, highlighting the film and TV sector’s positive rebound in Hertfordshire, following the disruption caused by writers’ strikes.
This resurgence has been supported by Hertfordshire Film Office, which works hand in hand with local authorities, districts, studios, and locations, to attract and support productions of all sizes looking to film locally. The Film Office has also strengthened its relationships with local partners to enhance data collection and reporting to ensure a more accurate reflection of the economic benefits filming brings to our local communities and businesses.
The economic impact of filming has been calculated using Filming in England’s Local Economic Impact Toolkit, which assesses the direct spending generated by filming activity in the area, from crew accommodation and catering to equipment hire and location fees.
The film and television industry continues to be a powerful engine of economic growth. Location filming provides a boost to local businesses – often SMEs, from hospitality venues to a vast range of service providers and suppliers - while also creating jobs, boosting tourism, and showcasing the UK’s unique appeal to global audiences.
Pippa Cawdron, Film Office Manager, said: "Since 2023, the Film Office has strengthened vital local partnerships, introduced a streamlined support package to help productions hit the ground running, nurtured local talent, and better captured the real value filming brings to Hertfordshire.
"To see £6.5m generated in just three months is a fantastic reflection of the groundwork we have laid, and we look forward to unlocking even more opportunities for local businesses and talent as we cement Hertfordshire’s reputation as one of the UK’s premiere destinations for film."
The Film Office was established by Hertfordshire Futures, part of the Growth and Environment directorate of Hertfordshire County Council, to maximise the economic potential of the county’s film and TV sector.
