Hertfordshire Futures was proud to partner with the UK Screen Investment Programme on its inaugural summit at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly on 26 November, bringing together leaders from government, major studios, independent producers, educators, and innovators across film, TV, technology, and construction.

Explore key themes from the event below.

A Powerhouse for UK Screen Industries

Home to world-class studios such as Elstree, Sky Studios, Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, and Fairbanks at the former BBC Elstree Centre, Hertfordshire plays a pivotal role in the UK’s creative economy.

Hertfordshire Futures Board member Cllr. Jeremy Newmark (Hertsmere Borough Council; Hertfordshire Growth Board; Elstree Studios), emphasized the sector’s importance:

“This isn’t just another conference. It’s the day we decide whether the UK is simply a backdrop for global stories or a driver of prosperity.”

Driving National Growth

The UK Screen Investment Programme (UKSIP) aims to accelerate growth in film, television, and the wider supply chain nationally. Cllr. Newmark highlighted the need for long-term investment and strategic partnerships to keep the UK competitive globally:

“We’re setting the global standard for how screen industries empower a modern economy.”

David Conway, CEO of Pinewood Studios and Chair of UKSIP, reinforced the country’s global leadership in screen industries, while noting key barriers:

“The industry faces headwinds from proposed tariffs, a moderation in growth and content investment, and changes in how people consume content — challenges the industry must adapt to.”

Government Support for Creative Industries

Tim Newns, Director at the Office for Investment, pledged strong government backing, citing the sector’s £5.6 billion contribution last year and its world-class talent:

“Government is hugely supportive and recognises the excellence we have.”

Skills, Innovation and Technology: Preparing for the Future

The ‘Homegrown and Hired: Aligning Skills with Industry Needs’ panel spotlighted the University of Hertfordshire’s Propellor Stages, a cutting-edge studio delivering advanced training for a diverse workforce.

Key insights included:

  • Virtual Production as a future driver (Rebecca Hawkes, Elstree Studios).
  • AI adoption and overcoming IP concerns (Laura Mansfield).
  • Embracing creative tech experimentation (Celia Taylor, Media Trust Films/Hertfordshire Futures).

Screen Tourism and Economic Impact in Hertfordshire

The ‘Screen-led Growth’ session explored Hertfordshire’s plans for a screen corridor along the Thameslink route, connecting King’s Cross, Camden Film Quarter, Elstree, Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, and the upcoming Universal Studios theme park in Bedford.

Highlights:

  • VisitBritain’s ‘Starring GREAT Britain’ campaign generated £200m in six months, boosting hospitality and tourism.
  • Hertfordshire Film Office reported £11.3m local spend from filming in 2024/2025, supporting 523 local businesses.

From Hertfordshire to Hollywood

With strong collaboration between Hertfordshire Futures, Hertfordshire Growth Board, and Hertfordshire Film Office, the county is cementing its position as a premier destination for UK and international productions, driving economic growth, job creation, and innovation.
