Broadband Connectivity

Project Gigabit

Project Gigabit is a £5 billion government programme bringing ultra-fast broadband (up to 1000mbps) to homes and businesses in hard-to-reach areas.

Digital Hertfordshire supported the government by sharing local insights about broadband providers. This helped identify places in the county that aren’t currently getting gigabit speeds—and aren’t likely to through commercial plans—so they can be included in future upgrades.

What's coming to Hertfordshire?

Three major contracts have been awarded to improve broadband in rural parts of the county:

Lot 5 – CityFibre

  • Mainly covers Cambridgeshire but includes around 2,000 premises in north-east Hertfordshire.
  • Work expected to begin in summer 2025.

Lot 26 – CityFibre

  • Covers Buckinghamshire, East Berkshire, and around 5,000 addresses in west Hertfordshire.
  • Work expected to begin in summer 2025.

Lot 26C – Openreach

  • A nationwide contract covering around 300,000 premises.
  • Hertfordshire will benefit with about 6,500 premises included.

Once CityFibre completes its surveys and planning, you will be able to check your postcode on their website to see if you are covered.

Gigabit for schools

The Department for Education’s Gigabit Programme aims to connect rural schools to lightning-fast broadband. Around 30 schools in Hertfordshire are expected to benefit by the end of 2025.

Please note:

All dates and plans are subject to change. Large-scale broadband projects can face delays due to technical challenges like surveying, planning, and network design.

Gigabit-capable broadband means any technology that can deliver one gigabit per second. In context, that's fast enough to download an HD film in under 1 minute.
