Broadband Connectivity

Digital Hertfordshire is supporting broadband connectivity across the county, bringing fast and reliable internet to homes, businesses, and schools - especially in hard-to-reach areas.

Project Gigabit

Project Gigabit is a £5 billion government programme bringing ultra-fast broadband (up to 1000mbps) to homes and businesses in hard-to-reach areas.

Digital Hertfordshire supported the government by sharing local insights about broadband providers. This helped identify places in the county that aren’t currently getting gigabit speeds—and aren’t likely to through commercial plans—so they can be included in future upgrades.

Transforming Connectivity for Hertfordshire’s Hard to Reach Schools

Local insight and national investment deliver fullfibre broadband to rural communities through Project Gigabit.

Hertfordshire Futures’ Digital Hertfordshire programme has supported the rollout of next-generation broadband to 30 schools in some of the county’s most hard‑to‑reach areas through the Government’s Project Gigabit scheme.

By analysing local connectivity data, the programme has helped double the number of schools earmarked for upgrades through scheme’s Schools Gigabit Connectivity Programme, which delivers full-fibre broadband to rural schools currently lacking access to gigabit capable networks.

The initiative is led by the Department for Education (DfE) and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), in partnership with BT and VMO2.

Connected Counties/Hertfordshire Broadband (2013-2021)

Between 2013 and 2021, Hertfordshire delivered over 50,000 superfast connections (24mbps and above) as part of a joint project with Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire Futures (previously known as Hertfordshire LEP), Openreach and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). That means over 98.5% of residents and businesses in the county were able to order a Superfast connection.

In early 2019, BT (Openreach) successfully bid for a £900,000 contract, with an aid intensity of 85%, to deliver an additional 400 superfast Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) connections across Hertfordshire. This included nearly 200 business premises under the Rural Development Programme for England, as part of a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) funded rollout.

Gigabit-capable broadband means any technology that can deliver one gigabit per second. In context, that's fast enough to download an HD film in under 1 minute.
